Sony’s new home console beats eight-year record set by PSP

PS4 becomes fastest-selling console in UK history

PlayStation 4 has become the fastest-selling game console in UK history, according to official chart stats.

Sony’s console, which launched last Friday in the UK, has sold over 250,000 units, beating the eight-year record held by its sister handhand, the PSP, which launched in September 2005 with 185,000 sales.

Industry sales tracker, Chart-Track, confirmed the news to MCV.

PS4’s sales also put it ahead of its rival, Xbox One, which launched exactly a week before it in the UK and sold around 150,000 units in its first 48 hours.

This early head start will be cause for celebration at Sony, which has been fighting a narrow battle for UK console gamers in recent years.

The highest charting PS4 exclusive was Sony’s Killzone: Shadow Fall at No.4. Knack by PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny arrived in 13th place.

Boosted by the arrival of PS4, the number one was claimed by Call of Duty: Ghosts. And EA’s FIFA 14 and Battlefield 4 moved down to No.2 and No.3 respectively.
