Detailed PlayStation Orbis specs leaked

Consumer site IGN has gone live with what it believes are some quite specific early specs for Sony’s PS3 successor, PlayStation Orbis.

It reckons the console will use custom chips based on AMD’s A8-3850 CPU and Radeon’s HD 7670 GPU – a rebranded version of the HD 6670 rumoured to be at the heart of the Next Xbox.

AMD’s CPU contains a quad-core 2.9GHz including an integrated graphics chip, meaning that developers will have an extra graphical component to play with.

This could be especially important and give Orbis a visual boost over the next Xbox, which in other ways will be very similar in terms of power.

IGN reckons the HD 6670 is, by today’s standards. Nothing more than an entry-level processor” that only clocks around 30 frames per second on titles such as Metro 2033 and Crysis 2 when run at 1080p.

Of course, free from the drains of the complexities exhibited by PCs, this would likely mean a performance boost for Orbis over a similar specced PC.
