Industry survey shows wage gap between men and women still apparent

A new developer poll shows that while the number of employed women has trended upward in the past year, a significant wage gap remains a standard between men and women in what’s still a male-dominated industry.

Border House Blog reports on findings from Game Developer Magazine’s 2012 survey that reveal females average a higher salary than males in only programming and engineering – just one out of seven included categories, and among the lowest rates for women at just four per cent (audio developers matched programing and engineering with male respondents at 96 per cent).

Average salary for men across all categories came out to $81,815, while females made nearly $15,000 less on average at $67,001.

Still, the number of female survey participants was up overall from 2011, as it was following 2010. Game producers showed the biggest increase, with women making up 23 per cent of the category’s total respondents – though still making around $6,500 less than male counterparts.
