Report: Google Play sees in-app purchase explosion

In-app purchases for Google Play offerings reportedlyhave seen a massive increase over the past year.

Reporting from the Google I/O conference, Inside Mobile Apps states that internal purchases in marketplace downloads are up 700 per cent year-over-year.

Google Play games business development head Bob Meese expounded on the figure, focusing on how acutely the market has shifted toward free-to-play models.

"We’re not saying you need to push everything free-to-play, however also recognize the dominant trend toward free-to-play," Meese said.

Meese noted that nearly all of the top grossing Google Play apps available on the store are free-to-play, with Minecraft: Pocket Editionbeingthe major exception.
