More EA layoffs reported at Galway office

EA has cut a number of staff at its customer service branch in Galway.

Ireland-based trade outlet The Journal reports on the redundancies, adding that they take place just seven months after the firm announced it would create 300 new positions in the country.

When asked for a statement, EA carbon copied the one they made last week, regarding the hundreds of EA Mobile layoffs in Montreal.

[EA is] sharpening its focus to provide games for new platforms and mobile” and that, in some cases, this involves reducing team sizes,” the statement read. These are difficult decisions to let go of good people who have made important contributions to EA, and whenever possible we retrain or relocate employees to new roles. Streamlining our operations will help ensure EA is bringing the best next-generation games to players around the world.”

While EA wouldn’t disclose the number of lost jobs to The Journal, the outlet understands that it’s just fewer than 20.

Ireland’s government also provided a statement on the news.

[IDA Ireland] has a longstanding relationship with EA – the company continues to employ significant numbers in the Galway area,” a spokesperson for the country’s industrial development agency said.

The publisheropened the Galway office in September of 2011.
