Pokemon Sun and Moon sell 1.9m copies in Japan

New 3DS titles Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon have failed to match the sales of the series’ 2013 releases.

Kotaku reports that Famitsu figures form the pair’s opening weekend in Japan pin unit sales at 1.905m. That’s a little short of the 2.096m sold by 2013’s Pokemon X and Y.

That still makes Sun and Moon the second biggest ever 3DS launch, however, and way ahead of the 1.5m units sold by immediate predecessors Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Note that these figures do not include digital sales, which you expect over time have formed a larger part of the overall pie.

Hope remains that the games will manage what so few titles have achieved this window and grow sales in the UK, thanks in no small part to the Pokemon resurgence we’ve seen on the back of Pokemon Go’s summer success.

With titles like Titanfall 2, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Dishonored 2 and Watch Dogs 2 falling short of expectations, a big hit would be most welcome when Pokemon Sun and Moon arrives tomorrow (November 23rd).
