Capcom resurrecting Strider franchise

The Strider franchise is being lined up for a return in 2014 publisher Capcom has announced as Comic-Con in San Diego.

It’s being developed by Xbox One Killer Instinct studio Double Helix Games, whose previous titles include Battleship, MX vs ATV Reflex, Front Mission Evolved and Silent Hill Homecoming.

Polygon describes it as a side-scrolling 3D title with nonlinear levels and an upgradable Strider Hiryu, complete with upgradable Cypher sword – although other weapons will also feature.

Players will also unlock what is described as a huge world map” as they level up. The main character’s old cloth scarf has been ditched in favour of a plasma scarf” that changes its appearance according to upgrades.

Capcom’s last release in the series was 2000 PlayStation release Strider 2, although the series is most fondly remembered for its 1989 arcade release that was popular on the Sega Mega Drive.

The game, currently called just ‘Strider’, is scheduled for release on PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC in 2014.
