Masters student working with engine team to support Oculus Rift

EA mulls virtual reality support for Frostbite

EA’s game engine Frostbite may get support for virtual reality headset the Oculus Rift.

The crowdfunded VR tech has many industry hats brimming with excitement over the possibility of an affordable, practical solution to one of gaming’s most compelling possibilities in bringing a new era of immersion.

Now Frostbite creative director Frank Vitz has told MTBS3D that a student working on his masters thesis is experimenting with support for the Rift SDK in the game engine.

"I am really eager to see how the Oculus Rift works with Frostbite," said Vitz.

"I have one of the first Rift dev kits coming my way in March. We have an internal community eager to work on it… I know of at least four kits on order."

While this is not confirmation that Battlefield developer DICE will actually release games with support for the Rift, and even if the project proves viable it will be up to individual teams to support it, Vitz is excited about the possibility of triple-A virtual reality titles.

"There are multiple titles in the works that would be awesome with the Rift," he said.

"Of course it will be the responsibility of each game team to ensure that their game works in S3D and with the Rift if it proves to be viable."
