Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture suffers second UK charts snub

The official UK video game charts aren’t the only ones to snub PS4 success story Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture.

MCV last week revealed that were the UK Top 40 to include digital sales, as it should, Sony’s Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture would have been this week’s UK No.1.

Now The Official Charts Company has chosen to remove the game’s soundtrack from the Classical Artist Albums Chart, saying its placement there the week before was made in error. Note the soundtrack is published on the Sony Classical label.

Very sad that the UK official charts have withdrawn my Rapture score from the classical charts – think it would have hit No. 1 this week,” studio head and composer at developer The Chinese Room Jessica Curry said on Twitter.

I feel passionately that music created for visual media should be able to be considered as classical music. What about Philip Glass’s work??”

The studio’s own Twitter account added: So @officialcharts denied the Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture OST by @jessicacurry2 it’s rightful chart placement. Just snobbery in action.

And it’s bullshit. Check the chart listings. Apparently movie soundtracks are OK but games are not. Hypocritical. If you also think that games are once again on the receiving end of elitism and snobbery, make some noise Twitter people.”

Speaking to Eurogamer The Official Charts Company defended the decision.

"We treat video game soundtracks in exactly the same way that we treat movie soundtracks – no original soundtrack recordings appear in the Official Classical Artist Albums Chart, whether they are movie or game soundtracks," it said.

"The fact that ‘Rapture does appear in the Official Classic FM Chart (which is, in essence, the industry’s Official Combined Classical Chart – and compiled by the Official Charts Company) reflects the fact that we do consider this a bona fide classical album – it is at No.7 on that chart this week."
