Further reports confirm upcoming PS4 Slim announcement

Sony has cut production of the existing PS4 ahead of the official announcement of the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Neo, reports have suggested.

The Wall Street Journal confirms that the PS4 Slim – which was leaked over the weekend – is very much real. It also says that the console will be revealed alongside the high-spec PS4 Neo at Sony’s PlayStation event on September 7th.

It adds that the PS4 Slim will retail for less than the current model.

Further sources told the site that supplies of existing PS4 SKUs have dried up in Japan, with retailers told that they shouldn’t expect any immediate restocks. Eurogamer goes as far as to say the new console will be released in September.

Microsoft this month released the first versions of its slimmed down Xbox One, called the Xbox One S. Two further versions are due this month. The platform holder has already officially announced and detailed its high-end Xbox Scorpio, which is due next year. Sony, meanwhile, has confirmed the existence of Neo, but has not yet released and specifics about the hardware.

Comparing Scorpio’s confirmed techs and what has been rumoured for Neo, it appears as if Microsoft’s machine will be significantly more powerful. Whether Sony has had the time to address this will presumably be discovered on September 7th.
