Major layoffs hit EA Mobile Montreal

A major round of layoffs has hit at publishing giant EA.

As reported by Gamasutra, the redundancies are said to have happened this morning and mainly affect employees at EA Mobile Montreal.

A source in Montreal claimed that around 200-to-250 developers had lost their jobs.

EA has refuted these claims however, and said that number is "too high". The publisher has also denied claims that the studio will close.

A statement from the company said a number of layoffs had been enacted as it looks to "sharpen" its focus on providing games for new platforms and mobile and streamline its operations.

"EA is sharpening its focus to provide games for new platforms and mobile," read a statement from EA.

"In some cases, this involves reducing team sizes as we evolve into a more efficient organisation. These are difficult decisions to let go of good people who have made important contributions to EA, and whenever possible we retrain or relocate employees to new roles.

"Streamlining our operations will help ensure EA is bringing the best next-generation games to players around the world."
