Indie hit could wind up on Sony consoles after end of Microsoft exclusivity deal

Mojang considers Minecraft for PlayStation

The makers of Minecraft are considering bringing the indie blockbuster to PlayStation.

Currently encumbered by an exclusivity deal with Microsoft, Mojang could bring the game to Sony consoles when the deal expires.

“Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles,” said Minecraft Pocket edition head Jens Bergensten in an interview with iGamer.

”When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.”

Minecraft is already available on PC, mobile devices, and Xbox, where it has shattered sales records for indie console games

Bergensten says right now the focus of development is on getting the mobile version of the game up to snuff with the PC edition.

“Our current ambition is to get the so-called online multiplayer going,” he said.

“This means that you’ll be able to connect to dedicated servers, instead of only connecting to other people’s devices.”

While Minecraft isn’t the biggest piece of software on the market, the various limitations of smartphones and tablets has proved to be a real barrier to development.

“The biggest challenge has been, and still is, finding the lowest common denominator for all the various mobile models there are on the market," explained Bergensten.

"It’s an obstacle to a lot of features that we have on the PC version, such as infinite worlds and redstone contraptions. Over time we’ll have to drop more and more models in order to add fun stuff to Pocket Edition.”
