PS4 won’t play 3D Blu-ray either

You’re going to have to keep hold of your PS3 if you want to carry on making use of that 3D copy of Avatar you bought for 20.

After it was revealed earlier this week that Xbox One won’t support 3D Blu-ray movies, it now looks as if the same is true of PS4.

As spotted by TheSixthAxis, the online PS4 user guide confirms that PS4 does not support the following disc types – CD, BD-RE ver.1.0, BD-R/RE XL, Blu-ray 3D or DVDs that have not been finalised.

The disc types that are supported are BD-ROM, BD-R/RE (BDAV, BDMV), DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW*2 (video mode, VR mode*3) and DVD+R/RW*2.

The omission of 3D support on Xbox One wasn’t the biggest surprise in the world – after all, 3D content in the home has been a resolute flop. But with Sony being such a champion of the format its lack of support on PS4 is more of a shock.

As with everything of this kind, there’s nothing to stop Sony patching in 3D support at a later stage.

Note that PS4 will support 3D games.
