NPD: PS3 surges month-on-month

Whilst Nintendo continues to outsell all its opposition in the August hardware sales figures in North America, the biggest gains were enjoyed by the resurgent PS3, according to NPD’s August sales data.

PS3 units sales were up an impressive 72 per cent over July, though Nintendo still emerged the clear victor – DS sales hit 553k whilst Wii sales reached 277k. Xbox 360 was third with sales of 215k, just ahead of PS3 2ith 210k.

All consoles bar the PS2 saw sales increase over July.

Madden NFL 10 was the best selling game by quite some margin. The all-American sports sim shifted 1,593,000 copies across Xbox 360 and PS3, with the Xbox SKU proving the most popular with sales of 928k. Its closest competitor was Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort which sold 754k.

Other big hits included Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Fossil Fighters.
