Ouya to hit retail in June, priced $100

Crowd-funded Android game console Ouya is set to hit US retail in June, carrying a price tag of $99.99.

CEO Julie Uhrman has said that the console will first be made available to Kickstarter backers in March, followed by preorder customers, who will receive the console in April.

The $99.99 price will include the console and one game controller. The company announced that the standalone controller will be priced at $49.99 i.e. half the price of the console. The controller will feature a touchpad in the central area.

The open nature of the Ouya hardware means that the controller will be usable with other devices, and third-party manufacturers will also be able to freely create peripherals for the console.

Ouya’s Kickstarter campaign raised $8.5 million and Uhrman revealed that 68,000 preorders have been placed for the device so far.

The company is yet to announce a line-up of games for the Ouya, but Uhrman told the Wall Street Journal, We have about half a dozen to a dozen community sites with lists of as long as 200 titles. You can expect games from every genre, from publishers you know, triple-A publishers.”

While rumours of Indian companies being in talks to release Ouya in India have been doing the rounds, there are no confirmed reports suggesting that the console will make its way to retail here.
