Xperia Play gets Minecraft exclusivity

The anticipated Android version of Mojang’s PC hit Minecraft is to enjoy a period of times exclusivity on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play.

Mobile versions of the game for iOS and Android were announced in February. It’s not the first time Sony Ericsson has struck an exclusivity deal on a big title as it looks to accelerate sales of the device in the market following what can only be described as a slow start.

Last month it was announced that total Minecraft sales had hit 2m downloads. It’s also in development for iOS devices.

The game’s creator Markus Persson has stated that the portable versions of the title will be adapted for the medium and will follow in the PC game’s footsteps by releasing early and updating frequently.

The Xperia Play suffered a troubled launch in the UK and is yet to arrive on previous launch partner O2’s network. The phone will launch in the US tomorrow.
