Sony announces scrappage scheme

Consumers could get up to 150 the asking price of a new Sony HDTV thanks to a brand new ‘scrappage scheme’ that has been announced by the tech giant and PlayStation platform holder.

The scheme begins tomorrow (April 29th) and will run until the last day of the World Cup Final on July 11th. Old tech handed in doesn’t have to be Sony branded and will be accepted even if in a poor state of repair.

Participating retailers include Sony Centres, Tesco Extra, Comet, John Lewis and Curry’s.

The deals available include between 100-150 off Bravia Cinematic TV sets, 50-100 off Bravia Essential TVs and 30-50 off Blu-ray players. There are also discounts available for digital cameras and home theatre systems.

We understand that consumers will undoubtedly want to upgrade their kit as they gear up for the World Cup this summer, but cost is still an issue for most of us coming out of recession,” Sony UK commercial director Andy Benson stated.

This campaign is not only timely in helping people take their entertainment to the next level, it is also a good way to encourage the responsible disposal of old technology.”

When asked by SCE UK about the possibility of a similar scheme being introduced for consoles, MCV was told this is a consumer electronics initiative and that SCEE has no plans to introduce a similar offer.
