Sony: PS3 is still on track

Japanese electronics giant Sony has insisted that despite the

f

alling annual sales of its PS3 console

, it is still on track to sell ten million units by the end of its financial year March 31st.

The exact year-to-date sales of the console are not known, though Sony has confirmed that it sold 4.46m PS3s in the three months ending December 31st – 440,000 fewer than it sold in the same period in 2007.

In terms of units, it is true that PS3, as compared to last year, is slightly worse, but on a full-year basis we believe we are on track to sell the 10 million units that I said at the beginning of the year,” Sony’s executive vice president and CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said in an earnings call according to Edge Online.

Relatively speaking, compared to the growth of other platforms, we are behind, but it’s not the case that we are not meeting the target.”

The firm, however, has slightly lowered its sales forecasts for PSP from 16 million to 15 million, with Oneda adding: We thought 16 million would be rather difficult to achieve after seeing holiday sales.”
