Super Mario World coming to 3DS?

The beloved classic platformer Super Mario World could be revamped for 3DS.

The notion cropped up during an IGN interview when a reader asked Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto what he would have changed when developing the original SNES version.

Well, you know, actually a lot of the ideas that I would have liked to have implemented in Super Mario World have come to life in later Mario games since then,” he said.

But the question gets me thinking about what fun it would be to create a Super Mario World game on the Nintendo 3DS and how we could use the depth and the sense of distance offered by 3D visuals on the world map and on the maps in that game, so that you have Bullet Bills flying at you from a distance and popping off the screen.”

When asked if this hinted that Nintendo was actually working on such a project, Miyamoto chuckled: I don’t know. Maybe.”

Nintendo has already announced a number of back catalogue titles that will get the 3DS treatment, including Star Fox 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
