Ubisoft assures fans over Assassin’s Creed: Unity microtransactions

The ability to pay cash for upgrades and unlocks in Assassin’s Creed: Unity will not alter the core experience, Ubisoft has vowed.

The full extent of the game’s microtransactions has not yet been revealed, but OXM reports that players will be able to pay real money to ‘hack’ items and unlocks in game as opposed accessing them through the game’s natural progression.

If we think it fits the gameplay, or the brand itself, the core values, we’re willing to take those risks. If not, then not,” senior producer Vincent Pontbriand said. We’re not going to make any compromises.

"Companion apps, monetisation, other business models, digital only… We have to be reactive to these things, but not necessarily fundamentally change what we’re trying to do.”

It’s easy to point the finger of blame for such practices at developers and publishers, but remember that such models are only employed because they successfully generate revenue – if gamers voted with their wallets and abstained, then the whole model would vanish overnight.

Last month Codemasters community manager Ben Walke said in a post then he admitted he would probably regret in the morning” that stat-boosting microtransactions were included in Grid Motorsport because it sells”.
