UPDATE: Layoffs hit games division at Disney India

Update: Disney India has issued the following statement in response to our report on the layoffs in its games division:

We are undertaking a restructuring in the Digital business, aligned with our global long-term digital strategy that is focused on sustainable profitability and innovation. The intent is to concentrate all our efforts in a few core focus areas of the business, in which we will continue to develop high quality interactive digital products, which include games, apps and other engaging offerings.”

Original story:

Around 40 employees from Disney India’s games division based in Mumbai are set to be laid off this month, a source close to the matter has informed MCV India.

More than half of those employees are said to be from the game publishing team, with several from the technical team also to be laid off.

These are the latest in a series of layoffs that have hit the games division at Disney India since November last year, our source confirms.

Close to 100 employees had been laid off in the months leading up to this month’s latest round of redundancies.

During earlier rounds of layoffs, affected employees had been given the option to take up jobs at other companies – Xerces and Chie Media – at the same salary with a one-year employment guarantee at those companies.
