Latest version of OSVR HDK headset adds diffusion technology to reduce ‘screen door’ effect

CryEngine now natively supports open-source OSVR platform

Crytek’s CryEngine has added out-of-the-box support for virtual reality headsets based on the open-source OSVR platform.

The flagbearer for the alternative virtual reality solution is the OSVR HDK headset, the result of a partnership between Razer and other tech firms to promote accessibility and compatibility in VR.

“The open standard encouraged by OSVR corresponds with our own desire to give CryEngine users total freedom of choice in VR development,” said Frank Vitz, the creative director for CryEngine.

“We’re excited to be supporting a platform that is designed to accelerate progress and expand the audience for VR, and we look forward to seeing how OSVR developers harness CryEngine to create innovative experiences.”

The HDK has itself been updated with a new diffusion film technology to reduce the presence of the ‘screen door’ effect often found in VR headsets. The add-on will be available as separate upgrade for existing owners of the kit.

OSVR also announced that a new version of its hardware will be available to order with support for Leap Motion embedded.

The news follows Leap Motion’s reveal of its Orion software, which tracks fingers and hand movements in VR.
