‘While we are making several large investments in a new slate of games in multiple locations, we must also be mindful of costs'

Kabam San Francisco lays off staff in shift to ‘fewer, bigger and bolder mobile games’

Mobile outlet Kabam has cut multiple jobs at its San Francisco head offices.

The number of staff laid off at the Star Wars: Uprising studio wasn’t specified, as it cited a shift in business strategy and investment as the reason to the losses.

"Kabam’s business strategy is to focus on fewer, bigger and bolder triple-A mobile games,” it told Gamasutra in a statement.

“We have made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our San Francisco-based studio. While we are making several large investments in a new slate of games in multiple locations, we must also be mindful of costs.

“We are extremely grateful to all the employees who have contributed to the longstanding history of Kabam’s San Francisco studio. This hard but essential decision allows us to stay focused on our mission to create the world’s favourite massively multiplayer free-to-play games."

It’s the latest round of job cuts to hit Kabam, following the loss of eight per cent of staff in February – a move which was also attributed to business changes.

In January, the company offloaded its old IP and publishing arms to Chinese firm Gaea Mobile in an effort to focus on new releases, including Marvel: Contest of Champions.

Kabam’s LA studio was bolstered in May by the acquisition of Dawn of Steel creator Superweapon, as the location continues to work on two unannounced ‘triple-A’ mobile releases.
