'Industry source' says Sony is moving away from its flagship tech; opts for AMD processor

Rumour: PlayStation 4 to ditch Cell

Sony may be moving away from the cell technology used in the PlayStation 3 it claimed would revolutionize consoles.

"Industry sources" have told Kotaku that Sony is ditching the tech, which consisted of a "Power Processing Element" joined to eight "Synergistic Processing Elements", designed to work in conjunction with other cell devices sharing processing power.

Cell did not catch on, and some say it did nothing for the PS3 but make it inaccessible to developers.

Forbes recently ran an article claiming that Sony would use an AMD graphics processor for the PS4, rather than an Nvidia chip as used on the PS3.

As of now, Sony has not confirmed these reports.
