Supermassive’s Doctor Who games canned as 50th Anniversary title surfaces

November is a busy month for the Doctor, but the Time Lord will still be putting in an appearance in the video games market.

The BBC has announced via Twitter that a new Doctor Who title will be released for iOS and Android "soon" – no doubt in time for the series’ 50th Anniversary on November 23rd.

Little is known about the game, but the BBC has confirmed to Develop that this announcement is legitimate. It is being developed by Tiny Rebel Games and Seed Studios. 

The news emerges as Guildford-based studio Supermassive Games has confirmed to Polygon that it will not be making any more Doctor Who games.

The studio created 2012 PS3, Vita and PC title Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, which featured the voices and likenesses of show stars Matt Smith and Alex Kingston.

The Eternity Clock was originally planned to be the first in a trilogy of planned console games, but the BBC has stated that there will be no more work on this series.

"We will not be releasing any further Eternity Clock games, nor did any other go into production," said Paul Joffe, the BBC’s vice president of digital entertainment and games.

"We also have no current work with Supermassive. We do have Doctor Who games in the pipeline and we will be announcing these in due course."
