Russian football club Spartak Moscow took a first tentative step into esports last September when they picked up FIFA player Sergei “KEFIR” Nikiforov, as part of the team.
Now, their looking to expand into competitive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends and Dota 2 with the announcement made at a press conference today.
Russian amateurs Rush3D will be representing the club in CS:GO. Rumours have swirled around a potential acquisition of players from Gambling Gaming, but it seems that they will be developing the players themselves moving forwards.
However, it appears that Spartak Moscow will be looking to pick up a more establish organisation for League of Legends and Dota 2. All rumours point towards the acquisition of Moscow-based Team Empire, who have published Spartak’s press releases, retweeted the clubs announcements and also follows Spartak’s Twitter account.
Spartak.gg, the clubs esports website, was registered by the same company that is behind Team Empire: MGO Empire LLC. Team Empire are an established brand, and although their League of Legends team isn’t great, Team Empire’s Dota 2 outfit have competed at several major events.
