Miitomo passes 1m downloads

Nintendo’s first foray into the world of smartphone gaming is off to a decent start.

Since its release in Japan on March 17th Nintendo’s Miitomo app has already been downloaded over 1m times, claiming the top spot in Japan’s free iOS app charts, Bloomberg reports.

Shares in Nintendo jumped 8.2 per cent on the news, with investors impressed that Nintendo was able to achieve such numbers without the allure of its big IPs.

However, while it tops the download charts VentureBeat reports that it could manage only 176th in the iOS revenue charts. In the Android charts it hit 268th.

However, microtransactions can take time to bed in and if Miitomo can maintain users’ attention and persevere beyond the launch interest, these numbers could yet pick up. IAPs range from as little as $1 all the way up to $75. And more premium content is being added all the time.
