Sonic Collection heading to next-gen?

Many of Sega’s classics are already enjoying great success on the download services offered by the current crop of home consoles, but now rumours are suggesting that a boxed compilation of its 16bit Sonic hits is heading to PS3 and Xbox 360.

A listing on Amazon, spotted by StrategyInformer, speaks of an upcoming release for a title called Sonic Genesis Collection for both next-gen consoles. Genesis is, of course, the North American name for Mega Drive.

Sega has enjoyed success with a similar boxed product in the past in the shape of 2002’s Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube and 2004’s Sonic Mega Collection + on PS2.

The publisher has plenty of Sonic games to choose from, including Mega Drive-era titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Spinball. It’s also possible that Sega could decide to bundle some of its later titles, including perhaps the previously Dreamcast-only Sonic Adventure series.

And MCV would love to see a re-release for under-rated Saturn classic Sonic R.
