Activision to close PSN COD servers?

PS3 owners may find themselves unable to play the latest Call of Duty titles online after Activision admitted it’s considering pulling PSN support from the games.

The recent surge in security breaches on Sony’s console has allowed players to use all manner of exploits and hacks in the online multiplayer, sparking complaints from gamers everywhere.

Activision’s senior tester and senior support representive Dov Carson responded to one such complaint about Black Ops, revealing that the publisher could shut down all Call of Duty servers on PSN, according to GamePolitics.

He said: The publishers have the right to shut down the servers for their game at any time as well which, based on the number of reported posts from users, may be a viable solution over the free PSN.”

Infinity Ward has also seen a significant rise in problems on the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2. On the studio’s forums, creative strategist Robert Bowling assured fans that his team was searching for a solution, but suggested that only Sony would be able to truly end the hacks.

Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they’re played on,” he said. Therefore, updates to the game through patches will not resolve the problem completely unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform.”
