Nintendo officially scraps Quality of Life sleep device

The future of Satoru Iwata’s Quality of Life initiative looks even more uncertain today after Nintendo admitted to officially abandoning its only product.

In October 2014 Iwata announced a sleep sensor, which to date is the first and only QOL device to be detailed. Now Wired reports that Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has told investors that it will not make it to market.

In regards to the Quality of Life [device], which was not mentioned in any of today’s questions, we do not have the conviction that the sleep-and-fatigue-themed [device] can enter the phase of actually becoming a product,” Kimishima said.

We no longer have any plans to release it by the end of March 2016. On the other hand, we still believe there are things we can do in the general category of Quality of Life, and we will continue to study the possibility of expanding into this field.”

Kimishima was yesterday quoted as telling investors that: It’s not yet at the level of a Nintendo product. If we can release it, we’ll release it. If we can’t, then we’ll examine things further.”

Note that no questions about QOL were put forward by investors.

Quality of Life was pitched by the late Satoru Iwata in 2013 as a new business pillar in Nintendo’s empire.
