PlayStation Phone is finally official

After literally years of speculation and months of information leaks, Sony Ericsson has finally confirmed what nearly every human being on the planet has known for weeks – it is planning on releasing a PlayStation-branded mobile phone.

An ad on the company’s Facebook page shows the device, saying that a full reveal will take place this Sunday February 13th at 18:00 GMT.

It carries the tag line "Android is ready to play".

Talk of the device has been rife since the latter half of 2010, though the closest we’ve got to an official announcement up to now is the admission by Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg that: "There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere. Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that’s very interesting."

However, the leaks reached a new high last month when tech blog Engadget got its hands on the device. Still, the site was unable to answer one question – exactly what PlayStation software will the phone offer?

The question was subsequently answered by Sony as part of its NGP reveal, in which it announced the PlayStation Suite. This platform will allow for the sale of mainly PSone software across a number of Android platforms, the Xperia Play (presumably) included.

Last week the first official video ad for the device appeared online, featuring a back-alley doctor butchering the iconic green Android robot.
