While OG may have won the Kiev Major, the most exciting matches came from Brazilian upstarts SG e-sports, who beat top seed Team Secret 2-1.
In what has been described as the David and Goliath battle of the Kiev Major, SG felled Team Secret, and their unbeaten string of 19 matches that saw them qualify as the top seed in the Kiev Major after the group stage.
Team Secret are a hard team to judge. The team are known for a poor performance at The International 6, and also failed to qualify for the Boston Major, however here at the Kiev Major they were dominant until they met unexpected resistance in the form of the South American side.
The next day, SG e-sports went up against Evil Genuises and sadly lost in a tough match that left several members of EG tweeting about the fight put up by SG, after beating the Brazillians 2-1.
South America has typically been underrepresented in top-tier Dota play, with The Americas’ qualifying process often being seen as a way for the North American teams to warm up ahead of tournaments. With this effort, the South American SG e-sports, formed in late 2016, have challenged that assertion.
