Tencent game revenue tops EA, Sony – report

Mobile and free-to-play giant Tencent has been beating out AAA companies such as EA and Activision Blizzard in terms of game revenue, according to a new report.

A recently published piece from Newzoo has the China-based corporation topping the 10 highest-grossing public game companies. EA and Activision Blizzard finished second and third respectively, while Sony and Microsoft round out the top five.

The rankings are based on game sales data taken from public earnings statements from January through June of this year. Tencent’s revenues show a year-on-year increase of 40 per cent to $3.5bn for the period—over a billion more than the closest competitor.
