Amazon enters grocery sector

In a surprise move, online retail giant Amazon has begun offering groceries on its website.

The move is bizarrely reminiscent of an April Fools’ story posted by MCV earlier in the year where we joked that GAME was breaking into the fruit and veg market in an effort to fight back against the supermarkets that have been muscling into the games sector in recent years.

Find everything you need to stock your kitchen cupboards,” the site reads. You’ll find fresh food like fruit and vegetables and meat & poultry. We also have an extensive range of dried goods including cereals, pasta and biscuits, snacks & crisps and baking supplies. Also, browse our range of alcohol and beverages, including beer, wine, tea and coffee.”

In total around 22,000 products are included in the new selection. Delivery options are no different to those normally offered by the site, including next day and free delivery options. Amazon will not be offering scheduled delivery spots like its supermarket rivals.

Amazon already offers a similar selection of products in North America. The UK service is currently only a beta.

Reuters reports that online grocery sales still account for only a tiny percentage of overall supermarket spend in the UK, though IGD forecasts predicts that the total value of the sector will reach around 7.2bn by 2014.
