EA, Nintendo and Sony withdraw SOPA support

Three of gaming’s biggest companies have withdrawn support for America’s Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

EA, Nintendo and Sony had all previously backed the movement but their names have since disappeared from the official list of corporate supporters.

The move comes as hacker group Anonymous released a video threatening to attack Sony for its previous support of SOPA.

Your support of the act is a signed death warrant to Sony Company and Associates,” it stated.

Therefore, yet again, we have decided to destroy your network. We will dismantle your phantom from the internet. Prepare to be extinguished. Justice will be swift, and it will be for the people, whether some like it or not.”

Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Nashville do remain as official supporters, however.

And while EA, Nintendo and Sony have withdrawn their names from the SOPA documentation, all three remain members of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which itself remains an active SOPA supporter.

Other active SOPA supporters include Marvel Entertainment, Disney Publishing Worldwide, Warner Music and Viacom.
