Ultimate Team enables consumers to assemble fantasy teams by purchasing footballer trading cards.

It was introduced in FIFA 09, for which the trading card DLC packs brought in 15 million, according to GameSpot. The follow-up in FIFA 10 netted EA 30 million.

We see people spending $500, $600, $700 on digital card packs to play Ultimate Team simulation mode,” said EA CFO Eric Brown during UBS’ 38th Annual Media Communications Conference

Brown added that EA expects to digital content to accoount for 20 percent of the publisher’s revenue in the next financial year, generating $750 million.

Last week, he said the firm is aiming to match the 40/60 split between digital and boxed product that has appeared in the wider games market.

The CFO also pointed to EA’s successful full-game downloads business – most notably XBLA and PSN shooter Battlefield 1943, which has generated $16 million in revenue for the publisher.
