Twitch announces mobile game broadcasting

Twitch has revealed its software development kit for mobile game broadcasting.

The SDK allows the capture of footage and audio from both the game and the devices camera and microphone. Furthermore, videos can be uploaded straight away at a variety of qualities.

It seems that this kit is more for developers looking to impliment livestreaming into their games, rather than allowing gamers to livestream anything from their phones.

Twitch already has a mobile app, which has been installed over 10m times, but this is the first time that gamers have been able to stream footage from their phone to the platform.

Our vision is to provide the Twitch community with the ability not only to view, but to broadcast live video game content wherever they are, whether they’re on the go or in the living room,” said Matthew DiPietro, Twitch’s VP of marketing.

We’ve achieved that with our PC and console integrations, so the trifecta will soon be complete with our deep and concerted foray into mobile broadcasting.”

Video game analyst of Wedbush Securities Michael Pachter added: "Facilitating the ability to ‘broadcast anywhere’ by bringing live streaming functionality to mobile has the potential to convert millions of Twitch’s passive viewers into active broadcasters.

Now that Twitch has cornered the PC and console markets with turnkey broadcast integrations, given the proliferation of gaming due to the massive penetration of mobile devices, they are in a unique position to change the game once again."
