Guild Wars 2 sells 3.8m copies in China

ArenaNet’s recent Guild Wars 2 launch in China has doubled the game’s sales worldwide.

Games Industry reports the NCSoft-published MMO has sold 3.8m copies in its first two months within the region. Phenomenal numbers, considering the title had sold just 3.5m a year after the game launched in multiple territories worldwide in August 2012.

The report points out to the game has found success with a pay-to-play model in a country where the market is dominated by free-to-play, adding that it backs the growing notion that the Chinese market is an untapped resource for developers in North America, Europe and elsewhere around the globe.

Both Sony and Microsoft are planning Chinese launches for their latest hardware releases.
