Riccitiello: “That’s more than all the people working for the world’s public games companies combined”

1.1m devs use Unity Personal Edition

Unity Technologies has revealed that well over 1m people are using the entry level version of its game engine.

Last year, the firm launched two versions of Unity 5 during GDC: the Professional Edition for larger studios, and Personal Edition for indies, hobbyists and studios that make less than $100,000. The latter has proven to be incredibly popular, with CEO John Riccitiello revealing that this SKU has over 1.1m monthly users.

“That’s more people than those that work for all the public game companies combined,” he told GDC 2016 attendees during Unity’s keynote today.

While it was expected that Unity would announced version 5.4 of its game engine, Riccitiello instead announced that version 5.3.4 is now available as a fully stable release.

Promising a change in the company’s approach to point-releases, the CEO said that 5.4 would continue to be tested in beta with the goal of being fully stable when it is released later this year. Unity intends to ensure all of its point-releases will be fully stable going forward.

He finished with a teaser for new tool Unity Collaborate, which makes it easier for teams and remote studios to keep up-to-date with changes made to their project.
