For any readers who might not know, tell us a little more about your company.
Unity Technologies is committed to democratizing development through our engine, platform and services that makes it easier for developers to be successful.
Our powerful graphics engine and full-featured editor serve as the foundation to develop beautiful games or apps and easily bring them to 25 different platforms, from mobile devices to personal computers, consoles and VR headsets.
After more than 10 years, Unity now serves over 1.5 million monthly users and a total community of 5.5 million-plus registered developers. We’ve seen phenomenal growth, and will continue to invest in graphics and performance, new products and future needs.
What’s unique about you?
We are proud to offer a fully featured free product, making creation truly accessible to a mass audience. The engine has continued to grow in terms of graphics and performance, and the quality achievable with the engine is truly remarkable.
But we know an engine is only one component of successful development, and that’s why our services, like analytics and ads, help developers optimize, engage, and monetize their games so they can focus on what they want: creating. And, most importantly, we wouldn’t be Unity without the community.
From hobbyists to artists and experienced programmers, it’s the passionate community gathered in our forums, Unite conferences, educational institutions and teams around the world that compels and motivates us every day.
What excites you about the games industry and games development today?
We can’t disregard the fact that the games market continues to grow; it’s a blue ocean of opportunity for developers who want to make their mark. And while we’re very excited about emerging platforms like VR and AR, we think there’s still innovation to be seen on mobile.
Console and PC are largely multiplayer and social, but that trend really hasn’t taken off on mobile – we think more developers will take this chance to make a change there.
What do you think the line-up of this year’s Develop Awards finalists says about the industry today?
We see many newer independent studios going toe to toe with more established names in design and audio categories.
But interestingly, we’re also seeing more established studios introduce new, surprisingly quirky, IP. It’s indicative of a power shift: as the quality of accessible tools improves, funding no longer precludes creators from all walks from standing out from the crowd.
Do you have a message for the finalists?
Congratulations on your achievements! And for those who’ve built on Unity: we’re humbled and honored to be a part of your journey, and join you in celebrating your success.
