Nintendo hints at possible collaborations with third-party devs

The president of Nintendo has suggested that the platform holder may work more closely with developers outside of its internal studios in the future.

Speaking at a recent shareholders meeting, Tatsumi Kimishima made possible reference to the upcoming launch of the NX console, as well as other plans for the console and mobile sectors with regards to both hardware and software.

The firm previously teamed up with Ingress developer Niantic to create AR-driven mobile title Pokemon Go (pictured).

“We will launch various projects in the future,” said Kimishima.

“Advancing projects like these will require the involvement and support of our partners and not just our own human resources.”

One of these projects is likely to be a controller for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, in line with the company’s recent push on the software side of the market.

Shinya Takahashi, director and GM of entertainment planning and development, proposed the firm’s move into making more ‘action’-orientated titles on mobile – presumably meaning games with more complex control schemes and mechanics.

He seemingly acknowledged that using a more traditional controller would make such games easier to create, but added that the company could also take a ‘Nintendo-like’ approach to solving the challenge of control inputs on mobile.

“Physical controllers for smart device applications are available in the market and it is possible that we may also develop something new by ourselves,” he said.

“On the other hand, I believe Nintendo’s way of thinking is to look at whether action games are really not impossible (without a physical controller for smart device applications) to create and how we can make it happen to create such a game.

“I think we will make applications, and not just action games, in consideration of what best embodies ‘Nintendo-like’ applications, including applications for everyone from children to seniors."
