NES Classic Mini will only ever have 30 games

Owners of Nintendo’s upcoming NES Classic Mini won’t be able to add new games to its library.

The $60 machine, announced yesterday, includes 30 built-in games. Nintendo has now confirmed to Kotaku that the machine does not use physical media and cannot go online, meaning no future titles can be added.

The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices,” the company said. The game lineup was chosen to provide a diverse mix of popular and recognizable NES games that appeal to a wide variety of players. Everyone should be able to find multiple games to enjoy.”

That’s not to say that cool functionality is not included. The controller, for instance, can connect wo a Wii Remote and be used for playing NES games via the Wii and Wii U’s Virtual Console.

It should also go without saying that the device has no cartridge port for compatibility with original games.

And for $60, this all sounds pretty fair enough, really. The software selection is great, including the likes of Super Mario Bros 1-3, Zelda 1 and 2, Gradius, Mega Man 2, Bubble Bobble, Castelvania, Punch Out, Metroid and Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins. Some good stuff, here.
