PopCap hit with unspecified layoffs, console team unaffected

PopCap has suffered an unspecified number of layoffs, publisher EA has confirmed.

An EA spokesperson told Polygon that the company doesn’t disclose numbers” regarding reductions in staff, adding that there are no changes to announce with regard to PopCap titles."

The spokesperson also confirmed that PopCap HD – the studio’s 40-member console team that developed Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare – was unaffected by the staff cuts.

"The changes we made today at PopCap were painful and we’re sorry to lose some of our friends and colleagues,” PopCap general manager John Vechey said in a statement.

But it was also necessary in order to stay on course with our future plans for mobile games, live services and new IP. PopCap is a studio that made its name building great games that the world can fall in love with, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

Earlier this month, PopCap revealed the studio is working on an unannounced console title.
