[Industry news] Rokky launches new tool for games studios to manage status of Steam keys

This is a press release posted in addition to our usual editorial content.

Rokky, the PC game distribution platform responsibly delivering publisher-approved keys to global markets, has today announced the launch of the Steam Key Checker. This free service provides game studios with new visibility into the activation status of their distributed Steam keys.

When publishers distribute game keys for promotional bundles, media reviews, or partner campaigns, the process often becomes a blind spot. With Steam only showing aggregated percentages for all batches, developers are left with no visibility into which keys remain inactive unless they are willing to check each generated key individually. This lack of transparency leads to significant lost revenue, as unredeemed promotional keys frequently surface on gray market reseller sites for cheap prices, directly undermining a studio’s direct sales. Furthermore, because Steam limits new key generation when too many existing keys remain inactive, unredeemed keys can impact future key supply for publishers.

Rokky’s Steam Key Checker solves this issue by allowing publishers to track the exact status of their keys. Available for free as a browser extension, publishers can upload a CSV file with the string of Steam CD keys to receive live data, including the activation status, dates, accounts, and batch tags.

After a promotional bundle concludes, studios can identify keys that were never redeemed using this tool, such as those sitting idle two weeks post-campaign, and revoke them safely. Developers can see exactly which partners activated which keys, identify inactive batches, and attribute sell-through accurately. This gives publishers manual authority to disable idle keys without ever touching those already activated by legitimate players.

Crucially, the extension is built with privacy by design. It runs entirely in Chrome or Edge browsers with no setup required, utilizing the publisher’s existing live Steamworks session. Traffic goes only to partner.steamgames.com, meaning no credentials or data are shared with Rokky.

Vadim Andreev, Co-Founder and CEO of Rokky, commented:

“Publishers often face difficulties when requesting new batches of keys from Steam, because a large number of previously generated keys remain inactive. They distribute keys among multiple partners, and after that, the process becomes a black box. We built this tool to give publishers visibility into the status of every individual key.”

The Steam Key Checker is available for free starting July 1, 2026. Game publishers, developers, and key distributors can access the tool by registering here.
